Teddy Bear Hospital by Imacats, Toys Need Imaginary Medical Attention Too.

Date: 27 & 28 November 2015
Time: 10.00 pagi – 9.00 malam
Venue: Shah Alam Convention Centre (SACC)

The Malaysia Islam Children’s Fair (MICF) or “Pesta Kanak-Kanak Islam Malaysia” is for all Malaysian children of all ages, said Dayang Lily Maznah Abang Muas, MICF Chairman. This is a platform to organize various activities, products and services related to Islamic education.

Moreover, MICF also launched a special program called: “Teddy Bear Hospital Program”, which is under the direction of Islamic Medical Association of Malaysia Childs and Teens Super Team (IMACAT). This program asked children to bring their own toys for respective health to have basic check-ups. This helped children to experience how medical experts perform body check-ups. We believe this is an immersive and interactive experience for the children to learn first-hand information about basic health check-ups.

Eartistic Hearing and Balance Centre had played a role on hearing health education in this program. We were glad to have 4 audiologists and a nurse to participate in this program. Through this program, we were able to expose children to the fundamentals of hearing screening, so they got to experience how an audiologist diagnose one’s hearing level, the importance of hearing aids, and the symptoms of hearing impairment. We also had a fun Q&A session with the children. Some of the questions were:

“How you can lose your hearing?”

“Can I pick my ear with cotton bud?”

“Is wearing hearing aids painful?”

We highly recommend everyone to discuss about health topics with their children because it does not only raise children’s awareness on various health topics, it also helps building their confidence to speak up and share ideas. Furthermore, this empowers children to realize that they have the rights and responsibility to take good care of their body.

Besides our hearing screening session, there were simulations on dental check-ups and MRI scans, performed by the medical students from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) dan Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Last but not least, we had a colouring session with the children on the logo of “Teddy Bear Hospital”.

A Visit from SK Bukit Rahman Putra

Date: 16th October 2015
Time: 10.00 am – 4.00 pm
Participants: 11 pupils, 4 teachers
Participants: 4 Audiologists and 2 nurses from Eartistic, 2 guest Audiologists from the UK

This program is a result of collaboration between Eartistic Hearing & Balance Centre and Parents & Teachers Society of SK Bukit Rahman Putra (PIBG SKBRP). The goal of this program is to diagnose the current level of hearing among pupils with hearing problems in this school. 11 pupils came to the centre aged within 8 to 14 years old. Some of them are wearing hearing aids, some with cochlea implant and some of them are not wearing any devices. However, sign language is their main communication in school.

Every pupil gets 30 minutes of Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA) and while waiting for their turn, otoscopy and tympanometry were performed. History of pupils’ hearing at school, especially in their classroom, were provided by the teachers. The teachers were very helpful because they care about their pupils. They made the pupils very comfortable about communicating their hearing conditions to us.

We finished the hearing assessment at about 3.30 pm. Puan Hawati, who is the Guru Penolong Kanan Pendidikan Khas SKBRP, was informed about the follow up of the event. Eartistic’s team will go to SKBRP to send the full report of the diagnostic results. We are going to see the teachers and discuss about the next step to help the pupils.

Back To School Trip

On the 4th November 2015, we went to SK Bukit Rahman Putra to hand-in the diagnostic results. It was the activity week at the school. The children actually have their own stalls selling a variety of things that they made themselves. We were very impressed on the school’s initiative to introduce some entrepreneurial experience to the students.

Then, we were brought to the staffroom to meet other teachers. The session to explain and hand-in the results held in a casual setting. Results and recommendation for every pupil were explained and discussed with the teachers. In conclusion, we believe pupils and parents need motivation and awareness about the importance and benefits of hearing particularly hearing devices.

We had such great collaboration with SK Bukit Rahman Putra that we will have another program coming up for the children.

Stay tuned!
